About

Bringing Modern to Vintage

I've always loved to paint, but my repurposed thrift art parodies began as a joke. Becca (my wife) is a thrift store junkie, and sometimes she'd drag me along on her excursions with her. On one such occasion, we passed a section of old artwork and joked that it'd be funny to add a monster to one of the scenes. Not too long after that, Becca came home with a few old prints in tow...

At first, I painted generic monsters and robots, but as time went on, I'd look at a painting and think, "Oh, that really needs to have the Millennium Falcon in it," or that "Vigo the Carpathian is really missing from this picture." These were the characters that I grew up with; I loved Star Wars, and Ghostbusters, and Mario Brothers (when I could get the controls out of my Mom's hands- she was a Mario Brothers addict), and it's been really fun to imagine them in situations outside of what we've all seen them in.

"Oh man! My grandma used to have that print hanging above her couch!" is phrase I hear often. Most people aren't overly excited to inherit those old prints, which is why I find so many abandoned old pictures. All of the pieces that I paint into come from thrift stores and garage sales where they've been dropped off and forgotten. More often than not, I have to dust them off before I can paint into them.

It's a lot of fun to see the process come full circle; taking a piece that once hung proudly in someone's home, that's then abandoned, repurposed, and hung proudly again in a home for people to enjoy and to laugh at.

This art should make you laugh; that's what it's meant for, and I hope that it does.
