We only use top quality vegetable tanned leather for all our leather flowers. It is estimated that today less than 10% of the world’s leather is vegetable tanned. Vegetable-tanned leather uses vegetable and plant-based agents for tanning. It is an environmentally friendly form of tanning and gives leather a uniquely soft, natural-looking finish. Its tanning process can often take weeks to complete vs. the few days it takes chrome-tanning to get the job done -- making it a time and labor commitment with extra associated costs. In addition, vegetable-tanning requires a great deal of craftsmanship and expertise, resulting in a higher cost of production. Vegetable tanned leather products will last a life time.

More than 85% of the world’s leather is chrome tanned. Quicker, cheaper, and easier to produce, chrome tanning can take only a few days instead of weeks. The main raw material used in the Chrome Tanning process is sodium dichromate, which is a carcinogen that is highly toxic. Sun-drying and boiling can oxidize and convert chromium 111, which is used in tanning, into highly toxic chemicals such as hexavalent chromium and chromium V1. Chrome tanned Leather production causes deforestation, biodiversity loss, and more greenhouse gas emissions. It takes a lot of energy and water to produce, and there are a lot of chemicals used in the tanning process. It not only causes environmental damage but also the person wearing it.
