The life of a crafter.
When I was young, I always loved to create. Those days I guess were a stepping stone for the years to come. One day when my 3 children were ready to start heading off to school, I decided to try a craft show. The beginning of my show career was not as successful as I wanted it to be. I did however, use the experiences to learn what I needed to do differently. As my 3 children grew up, they all helped with the business...my son cut out most of my wood for me. My girls helped with the painting and staining...they also learned how to interact with the public by traveling to the shows and helping set up, sell and break down our booth. Today they all have successful careers.
Little by little I found a following, especially when I changed my look to a country primitive style. I found success in such a way it kept me quite busy preparing for the shows. Most of the shows are busy, especially the Fall and Winter ones. I used to do about 25 shows a year, but the economy took away quite a few of them and they no longer exist. Now I do about 12 a year with most being from September to December.
The process starts by a ride to the lumber yard to find my wood. From there we haul it home to the garage where the patterns are traced to the wood. Most patterns are cut out with a band saw...but with some patterns we use a scroll saw as well. The pieces then get sanded, making them ready for the paint. Details such as lettering, faces, stripes etc. are then added. Once they dry, the pieces all get stained front, back and sides. Once the stain dries for a day, I assemble the pieces...add a base if needed...or wire if it is a hanging item.
I pride myself on always having new items available at each show I do. Most of what I create are from my own thoughts. I set up my booth at the show so that it looks like a small shop. Many of my customers have been with me for years and they have become good friends.
