How I keep my children under 6 busy for a long time without any screentime!
I am a SAHM mom of two energetic boys under 6. During the pandemic, I hit a roadblock being stuck at home the whole day. There was lots of screen time, the mess from toys, sensory bins, and art and crafts. This left me drained and exhausted with no time for self-care, cooking dinner in peace, or even having a cup of hot coffee. I was tired, exhausted, and crankier than the kids!
I decided to homeschool my older child and printed worksheets and tracing pages on our first day….guess what happened? It was a disaster!!
He refused to do a single worksheet and my younger one was constantly at my hip demanding attention leaving me so frustrated.
Thus my journey began in making busy books printable, flashcards, and Learning posters/charts for both my kids and I called it LearningPacks. I incorporated themes that toddlers love (like rainbows, vehicles, dinosaurs, and animals) with education. The activity pages were laminated(or put in plastic sleeves) to make them reusable and organized in binders and I kept a pack of reusable markers with it.
Guess, What happened next?
both the children quietly completed all their busy book pages with minimal assistance
both were HAPPY and EXCITED about the learning activities
both didn't demand screen time!
They were entertained and engrossed for a long time
NO TANTRUM!
No fights
No mess
And What about ‘The Mom’?
Well, I could FINALLY
Cook dinner in peace
Drink COFFEE quietly
Take a shower
without much SCREENTIME!

Hands-on activities are excellent for children but most of them end up with a BIG MESS and are not at all practical when you are finally done with the dinner only to find sensory rice all over the floor.
I dreaded hands-on activities as there was Play-Doh stuck on the carpet, paints on the walls, big puddle of water on the floor!
Well, I am not AGAINST it but it requires COMPLETE supervision to avoid the mess.
And if you are feeling guilty about giving too much screen time - that's okay! I have done it too :) Moms need a mental AND physical break, right?
