About

The Dropclloth Story

Six years ago, in the summer of 2010, I was living in Chicago, running a textile department at a small community art center. Amongst other things, I taught embroidery and screen-printing. One of my favorite things about the job was watching the drop-cloths develop over the years as more and more images got accidentally added, and more unpredictable smears of textile ink got splattered.

That same summer, I got invited to teach at Squam Art Workshops in New Hampshire, where I found out I would have a table at the craft sale. After hemming and hawing about what to bring, I decided to print a sampler design. I had long been interested in the history of embroidery, and specifically colonial American samplers, and I thought having a printed design might inspire more people to take up embroidery.

Well, it was a lucky summer that year, as hoards of Squam craft fair shoppers bought that first design, and then blogged about it, forcing my hand to open a shop while I was on vacation in Michigan. I watched in awe as order after order came in on my i-phone and we shipped them out at the local small town post-office, using business envelopes and scotch tape. After my love of screen-printed accidents, I named this shop Dropcloth. Each design comes with no directions, in the hopes that you will find your own happenstance color relationships growing as you make it up as you go.

Fast forward a few years, and I've lived in Brooklyn, NY, and now Portland, OR. I've designed lots and lots of samplers since that first summer, but the best selling Original Sampler is still the fan favorite.

In the summer of 2010, on a whim, I designed and printed an embroidery sampler, and sold over a hundred of them at the Squam Art Sale. Word got around the blog-o-sphere, and one thing led to another. A few weeks later I started a blog and an accompanying shop (this one!) to sell samplers online. They were wildly popular, and six more have been designed and printed as multiples since. I am so grateful for the popular interest in these samplers. Although they are separate from my studio practice, they certainly are informed by my artwork and most definitely help support my artwork. Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
There are a few ways to pay with Etsy. You can pay directly with a credit card or use PayPal. If you decide to pay using an e-check through Paypal, I will ship your order as soon as the funds clear (it can take up to a week).

Remember, your order is not complete until you pay for it!
Shipping
I try my best to ship orders within three days, and as often as not I ship out sooner than that. Occasionally I travel, and when I do, I carefully note in the notes to buyer e-mail you'll receive upon purchase. If you are concerned about a shipping time, please send an e-mail to check in.

My shipping materials are repurposed and recycled. I am an avid envelope collector, so you may find a bright and colorful package in your mailbox! Larger orders ship in recycled paper boxes and mailers.

Please note that I ship via first class mail, which is usually quite speedy in the US, but occasionally can take up to two weeks.
Refunds and Exchanges
As you can see by my feedback, customer service is very important to me. If for some reason you are unhappy with your order, please be in touch right away and we'll figure it out together.
Additional policies and FAQs
All artwork is copyright Rebecca Ringquist. Purchase does not transfer ownership. Please do not reproduce my artwork. Thank You.
