Theres alot you can do with a role of sticky tape and a pair of scissors!
emsOriginal first began in January 2010 by myself the Artist Emma Sharples. After finishing university in 2008 with an art degree i knew i couldn't settle in a 9-5 office job, my office manager often caught me folding paper into mysterious objects and doodling whilst on calls. I began with the basics firstly creating cards, wedding stationery and designs for family and friends, and artworks that began to inspire my one-off commisions and before i knew it i was getting lots of requests for different things, so I decided to take one big risk and quit the day job and try and make it on my own!
I stepped out into the big wide world with the help and support of a local gallery owner Sara Hoodfar who found me a beautiful space to work inside her lovely shop the Cherry Tree in Knutsford. In October 2012 emsOriginal took a new big step and found a new Drawing Room in the Lavender Tree in Alderley Edge!
But here is a little bit more about me and how i got where i did...
After studying Interactive Arts, a fine art degree at Manchester Metropolitan University I spent my university degree really experimenting in mark making and it was only within the final weeks leading up to my degree show i really found me and my style.
During my degree I first had intentions to pursue a career within television and film set design. I gained experience wherever i could during my degree and worked for well know department store gaining experience in visual merchandising designing in-store sets and later, further to pursuing a career within television I have a small claim to fame as i was lucky enough to work as a runner on the BBC production Blue Peter!
After degree and the success of my degree show "The Full Kit & Caboodle"- and the interest in the products and gifts I created at the show I decided that I could try selling the gifts commercially.
So in 2009 i trundled along to my local gallery the Cherry Tree with portfolio in hand and luckily my designs were very well received. I spent 2 more years before setting up emsOriginal, working in various jobs well building my card range and building my work within weddings and then i was suddenly aware i was getting more and more orders and knew i needed to take my gut feeling and dive straight in, and quitting the day job I decided to choose a path where I put pursuit of happiness first.
