Artist / designer mom takes matters into her own hands...
As an artist and designer with a love for fashion and modern design I struggled trying to find unique, modern and affordable clothes for my son. So I drew on my design sensibility, my past-life as a pattern maker, and my ridiculously heavy industrial sewing machine to take matters into my own hands.
Always a fan of a good hat, I started a sizable collection for him - he does look good in a hat as you can see - he is my main Etsy model. But I wanted more. Inspired by a previous experiment with converting an old t-shirt of Chewbacca into a throw pillow, I decided to create something one of a kind for him using another t-shirt. And the hat line was born.
I started by making hats with all my well-loved t-shirts, capturing the coolest part of the prints and playing with fun shapes for the hat. I love the "bunny ear" shape - in fact, I used to knit myself cat-ear knit hats years ago.
My next experiments were with screen printing. Always a fan of a simple design, I started with basic shapes and sayings, adding them to his existing shirts and sweats - in some cases to cover stains, and in others just to jazz up a basic look. Adding them to the hats was a natural fit.
My latest is with the aviator style hat. As the weather turns cold in Seattle, keeping those ears warm is a top priority.
I hope you have as much fun with the hats as I have making them. Each one is a labor of love, and for the OOAK hats, a struggle to part with.
And I also hope you check back often as you see where the next experiments take me.
