About

Holding Pattern Studio. Hand carved stamps. Hand sewn leather. High Five.

I am a scientist by day and a leather crafter in my spare time.
Just my hands. No machines.

The process is a lot of fun. I hand carve my own stamp patterns, block print them onto leather and then cut, score and punch the holes and hand sew each item together.

It was important to me to source my leather from a tanneries in the USA; each tannery has a unique story (see FAQs). I primarily use leather "seconds" which are the hides that would normally be discarded due to minor defects. I have found that the blemishes are minor, avoidable when making small accesories, and honestly, I like when things have character!

Holding Pattern Studio (HoPa for short) is my way of bringing handcrafted leather goods to everyone. I wanted people to be able to afford a handmade accessory made from ethically sourced leather without the cost being too outrageous.

Care instructions

Caring for your HoPa:

HoPa bags and wallets are artfully hand crafted in Baltimore, MD and are designed to enjoy daily use.

Because our leathers are untreated, they are not water resistant. You may consider treating your HoPa with a leather wax for its protection, but note this will change the base hue of the leather. Vegetable tanned leathers are expected to darken over time and will develop a character reflective of its journey.

As with any leather, we recommned not placing your HoPa on wet spots, the ground, or exposing it to inclement weather!

Where does your leather come from?

Mostly, my cow and goat leather hides are sourced through two tanneries, and are usually ordered as the "seconds" hides, which contain minor blemishes.

Pergamena, a tannery in Montgomery, NY provides all my goat leather and some cow leather. The hides belonged to animals that died naturally or were raised for food. Most of the hides come from local farmers in the northeastern United States. Their leather is vegetable tanned and aniline dyed if it has a color: www.pergamena.net

Horween, a tannery in Chicago, IL, provides cow leather. I primarily use the Essex line, and sometimes use chromexcel leathers: www.horween.com

I have also been experimenting with leather from Wickett and Craig in PA: www.wickett-craig.com
