I live on the edge of the Wirral peninsula, where we are surrounded on 3 sides by water.
Cuando camino hacia la orilla, es como entrar en un mundo diferente en el instante en que pongo un pie en la arena. Quiero que mi trabajo capture un pedacito de este sentimiento, un recordatorio de ese otro mundo a lo largo de la costa; ya sea la sensación del guijarro alisado del mar que recogiste, o la escena costera en la pared que te recuerda una vista favorita.
Siempre he sido un fabricante, desde mis primeras creaciones inspiradas en Blue Peter, progresando a varios pasatiempos creativos y haciendo mi propia ropa. Así que cuando, después de una carrera en TI y 2 niños encantadores, tuve la oportunidad de estudiar artes aplicadas, aproveché la oportunidad.
Realmente no esperaba elegir el vidrio como mi especialidad, pero había algo en el material que me atrajo; no tanto el color y la transparencia, que son sus cualidades más obvias, sino las posibilidades de superponer y crear profundidad y textura, y el hecho de que como material puede ser increíblemente táctil, ¡aunque reconozco que acariciar un pedazo de vidrio no es la primera reacción de la mayoría de las personas! Así que aquí estoy, unos años después, todavía con la cabeza llena de ideas, creando arte de pared de vidrio fundido, artículos decorativos y accesorios en mi propio estudio de vidrio.
When I walk down to the shore, it is like stepping into a different world the instant I put foot on the sand. I want my work to capture a little piece of this feeling, a reminder of that other world along the shoreline; whether it's the feel of the sea smoothed pebble you picked up, or the coastal scene on the wall that reminds you of a favourite view.
I’ve always been a maker, from my first Blue Peter inspired creations, progressing on to various creative hobbies and making my own clothes. So when, after a career in IT and 2 lovely children, I had the opportunity to study applied arts, I leapt at the chance.
I really didn’t expect to choose glass as my specialism, but there was something about the material that drew me in; not so much the colour and transparency which are its most obvious qualities, but the possibilities of layering and creating depth and texture, and the fact that as a material it can be incredibly tactile – although I acknowledge that stroking a piece of glass is not most people’s first reaction! So here I am, a few years on, still with a head full of ideas, creating fused glass wall art, decorative items and accessories in my very own glass studio.
