Art is my boss!
I was always going to be an artist. I just knew it. I didn't know what it meant until about 10 years ago though. I wanted to be a photographer and actually got my BFA for it at Columbus College of Art & Design. Turns out, once I worked in the field a few years, it wasn't tactile enough for me. I had taken many art classes but nothing was ever quite "enough" for me.
With mega student loans due I started selling my extra college artwork at shows and fairs around my hometown. It was about my third show when I realized this could be a thing. It also told me that people were more interested in my figures than my photography. So I decided to have fun exploring. I started with painting but that wasn't enough. Through MANY material explorations like sewing/fabric, ceramics, printmaking and collage; I settled on collage. Then painted over it. It was (and is) magic to me.
It's been many years and I feel like I'm finally in the vibe of my style. People usually think my work is all painting until you see it up close. I start by hand drawing my subject then cut it out. The rest of the image is all found paper and ink wash. I accidentally minored in art history, so the gold moon halo that is in almost all of my work is a nod to one of my favorite periods of Icon paintings.
I've had nothing but a blast traveling the country, meeting new people & sharing our love of art. I keep a current list of my shows on my website www.katemorganart.com if you want to see if I'll be near you. But if not, have no fear...I'm always on Etsy!
