Stained Glass Home Decor & Jewellery by mairidesign

Hello, Mairi here, thank you for visiting my Etsy shop and I welcome you to browse through my creations for sale.

Note: There may be disruptions to the postal service due to the lack of international transport capacities.
Thank you for your understanding.

I design stained glass home decor, which includes wedding, anniversary and engagement gifts; mirrors, suncatchers, candle holders and other ornamental houseware. I also make jewellery from this gorgeous coloured glass, such as pendants, brooches and rings. Additionally, I use sea glass, glass beads, picture images and glass cabochons to create jewellery - please, visit my SeaGlassPebbles shop

So, as you can see, glass is the theme for my creativity. When textured or domed glass warps and enhances what lies beyond, bringing life to the stillness, it makes me very happy.

I specialise in custom made wedding gifts designed from the couple's wedding invitation. This idea can be used for an anniversary gift or an after-wedding gift as a memory of their special day. After-wedding gifts are great for those who got married away from home and I can use a wedding photograph for the design.

I have been designing and making stained glass since leaving school. That's actually quite a long time, so you can be sure of having a quality piece of glasswork. Over the years, I have also achieved my BA Honours Degree, in Silversmithing & Jewellery Design, from Glasgow School of Art and have worked as a graphic designer and retail manager. I am now living and working in Prague, Czech Republic - home of the beautiful Bohemian glass - and also teach English as a second language.

I was lucky to get a training placement with a Scottish Tiffany style glassworker when I was a teenager. I learned my craft and went on to work full-time for a leading glazing company, designing and making stained glasswork, using Louis Comfort Tiffany's copper foil and solder technique. After a few years, I decided to take a slight change of direction and went to college and art school to achieve my degree in silversmithing and jewellery design. Afterwards, I took up a position helping my friend (whom I met while training and worked with at the glazing company) grow her graphic design and retail business. I learned practical design skills and was also able to use my illustration skills in bespoke stationery and we continued to make our stained glass.
One day, my husband and decided to leave Scotland, for Prague, and we have never looked back.

I begin by creating the design and finalising a template, which I use to cut the glass pieces. I use pre-coloured sheets of glass and cut shapes with my glass cutter then grind the edges on a water-fed machine, producing something like a jigsaw puzzle. I then wrap the edge of each piece of glass in copper-foil, ready for soldering. This is the Tiffany technique, or the copper foil and solder method, of stained glass construction. When Louis Comfort Tiffany began using the method, over a century ago, workers used scissors to cut thin sheet copper into strips. The strips were spread with molten beeswax on one side to make them sticky and then wrapped around the glass before the wax hardened. Nowadays, we use rolls of copper foil with the adhesive already applied. Tiffany experimented and produced many wonderful types of sheet glass, which made the work come to life, and which is replicated in today's modern artglass.

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalised orders

I specialise in creating wedding gifts based on the couples wedding invitation. Just send me a scanned copy and I'll see what I can do. This was a line that began by a family friend asking for a wedding gift and I'm now her port-of-call whenever she gets an invitation.
Also, if you have your own ideas for a design or would like one of my pieces personalised with wire detail, I'd be happy to discuss it with you: my beer glass is ideal for having a name written in wire over the foam.
Much of my work can be redesigned for a different purpose, for example, I was asked to make bird rings using my bird brooch designs, which turned out beautifully and resulted in a very happy customer. I'd be more than happy to do something similar for you too.

Sizing details

Measurements are given in centimetres (example: 10.5cm) and inches (example: 5+1/2"). Being handmade, sizes are approximate because each piece may vary by a fraction, but are as close to accurate as possible.
Most items in my shop can be redesigned to fit specific size requirements.

Care instructions

Use a dry cloth to dust and polish the glasswork. You can use a damp cloth or soft brush and, if necessary, add a little liquid soap or glass cleaner and rinse well.
Where there is wirework, clean gently as some parts may bend. Over time, the silvery coating on the wire will rub off and show the copper base metal.
Vases are not watertight and should be used with florist's oasis sponge or dry flowers.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Each item will be safely packaged with bubble wrap and cardboard or other padding.
For gift giving: for an extra fee, I can gift wrap your purchases in seasonal or neutral paper, tie with ribbon and add a gift tag, with or without your message to the recipient. Jewellery will be put into either organza bags or small gift boxes, wrapped in bubble wrap and sent in bubble envelopes. Flat work, like suncatchers, can be packaged in a gift box and bubble wrapped. Larger items, may not come in a gift box but will be securely packaged.
I reuse boxes and packaging where possible so you may receive your purchase in a printer ink box rather than a posting box.

Wholesale availability

I would be happy to provide stock for local and European outlets. Just send me a message.

How to review your purchase

Buyers use Etsy’s five-star review system (1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest) to review their purchases.

International Shipping

Due to the current epidemic, there may be disruptions to the postal service. Please, send me a message before ordering as the situation changes daily. Czech Post has suspended shipments to China, Israel, Iran, South Korea, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Cyprus, and Georgia, therefore, I cannot send anything to these countries.

Please read my shipping policies for delivery estimates. All items from mairidesign ship from the Czech Republic (EU) and I have based my estimates on previous delivery times to international destinations. Peak periods and postal disruptions will affect these estimates. An express service is available but is expensive, therefore, I recommend placing orders six to eight weeks in advance of the required date.
