Owner, Maker, Designer, Gemstone Collector, Mother, Sea Lover
I’m Marta Oms, jeweller and gemologist, from Sabadell (Barcelona, Spain).
Each Marta Oms piece is designed and built with my hands from start to finish. I use many traditional metalsmithing techniques in my work and spend most of my time sawing, filing, sanding, soldering, hammering and making bezels. My inspiration comes from nature, emerges from a trip, other times from a story I have read, or even from a dream I have had, but most times I feel that there is someone whispering and guiding my hands into a jewel.
You can find me working with precious metals, specifically gold and silver, using the large amount of tools I’ve acquired over the years at my workshop. I feel proud when a jewel travels to you and you love it the same way as I did when I was making it.
A jewel is something we wear to beautify our body. As someone who gets a tattoo, changes their hair or gets a piercing, I change my jewellery every day depending on my mood. I like to wear my jewellery as much as I like to show off my tattoos.
I’ve always been making things with my hands. When I was a child I spent a lot of hours drawing and painting. My mother always tells the story of how she only needed a pencil and paper to entertain me. She used to let me get dirty making figurines with clay. My father was a carpenter and he used to make wood toys, the classical ones like little kitchens, houses, horses, supermarkets and small furniture for dolls. I had been working with him several years and this made me realise that I was born to work with my hands.
When I was at Art School I thought I wanted to be Sculptor, because I was more capable with three dimensional surfaces and objects than paintings. One day I discovered that my Sculpture teacher was a jeweller and my question was “Wow, is that something posible to study?”. The answer of this question opened a whole world on me and that day I decided that I will study for that.
At 18 years I enrolled in Escola Massana at Barcelona, where I learned about metals, forging, micro fusion, stones, galleries and everything related to a jeweller. I also did a specialisation with Enamelling and Setting stones during the last year of Massana’s School.
My fascination for gemstones started as a child playing with my sister’s mineral collection, and when I finished Jewellery I decided to study Gemmology where I earned Gemologist titles from Barcelona University, and the FEEG (Federation for European Education in Gemmology).
Sometimes you take a decision that you know it will be important for your career and sometimes you don’t realise it's important until later. The fact is that the decision to be Gemologist has led me to discover a whole world very different from jewellery but also very related to it. I have been traveling to Germany every year to buy gemstones and I also have worked in International Trade Fairs like Inhorgenta (Munich) and Expominer (Barcelona). I had the honour to meet artists from all the world and had the chance to exhibit my works worldwide.
After working several years in jewellery shops like Baguena (Barcelona) and La Basilica Galeria (Barcelona) I decided to open my own business on 2008. Since then, I have been working as self employed in my studio built inside my home. My work is sold through my online store and I work also making custom pieces and my collections for other galleries and jewellery stores.
