Accidental Judaica Sewist
In early 2024, a friend in the process of converting to Judaism, mentioned he was looking for a "disco kippah." Figuring I'd find one on Etsy, I went looking.
Finding nothing that seemed to match the vision, I did what any person who studied history, has spent his career as a Jewish communal professional and lives in a relatively small New York City apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan would do: I bought a sewing machine and set out to make the disco kippah.
I'd taken a few weeks of sewing lessons as a teenager but hadn't touched a machine or a needle since. After some trial and error and some support from the wonderful sewist, Daryl Stone, I managed to make five disco kippah designs. I presented them to my friend on the day of his visit to the mikvah to welcome him into the Jewish people.
One thing led to another and mostlyarmulkes was born. Hundreds of yarmulke designs later, I'm thoroughly enjoying coming up with new design ideas and making them come alive. Some of the fabrics are designed by me and some by others; all are purchased as large pieces and patterned, cut, sewn and pressed by hand.
The vision for mostlyarmulkes is to:
- Continue enhancing the selection of general kippot
- Add kippot for each Jewish holiday and simchas/smachot
- Add other Judaica like challah covers, washing towels, baby gifts, etc.
