About

Virgil C. Stephens, Fine-Art, self employed artist for over 40 years with collectors worldwide

I started drawing as a child, and never put down the pencil. I became a professional artist in 1982 and never looked back. I morphed into painting 10 or 12 years ago, and now paint in oils, draw with graphite and occasionally do pen & ink. I use several different methods to produce my paintings, one of which is called the Rub-Out. I also draw with conte crayon and produce 95% of my art in drawing form and then add an oil wash. I haven't found anyone doing my type of art yet, however I'm sure there are others out there. I spend my days painting and for relaxation, I ride my mule Francine with my wife on her mule Big Red. I hunt and fish when I can. I live in the mountains of New Mexico on top of a mountain top that faces the Loma Grande Mountain Range on one side and the Capitans on the other. We are a bit remote, but I like it that way. I have 18 galleries that represent my art, as well as 4 online galleries, one with my pencil, the other with my oils and pencil and one with my music art. I am primarily a western artist but I do like to occasionally paint music scenes to unwind. I have 4 kids, 4 grand kids that are depicted in my art on a regular basis. I also, much like Norman Rockwell whom I have been compared to for years, use my neighbors and friends in my paintings, as well as my livestock. I have a summer home in Pentwater, Michigan where I spend three months painting for the fall, and tend to throw my line in the water in the early mornings and early evenings. The summer cottage is where the family comes together for a few weeks each year and we enjoy the finer things in life, hotdogs, chips and salsa and beer. I don't do many shows anymore but you can find my art if you google my name!
