Frequently asked questions
Do you post to my country?
Yes! Although I am based in the UK, I post orders all across the world using Royal Mail Tracked Airmail Services, or expedited service by UPS on request.
Can I just send you my pattern to order my skeins of thread/wool?
Yes! Please message me with a list, photo, pdf or file of your pattern list, and I will be happy to send you a quote and a custom listing for the skeins for your entire project.
I will be happy to help you colour match or convert colours if required.
Will CXC threads colours run in the wash?
No! CXC is fully colourfast just like DMC, which means it won't fade in sunlight, and colours won't run in the wash. This means its suitable for embroidery on clothes.
How is CXC thread sold - does it have the same colours as DMC?
CXC is a cheaper alternative to DMC, being sold in 8 yard/meter skeins and is labelled with the same numbers meaning you can easily replace your DMC patterns with CXC.
Unfortunately metallic and some limited edition colours are not available.
The shade numbers 01-35 are not available in CXC, but are sold in an alternative brand I sell called AMO which can be used well alongside CXC.
How is Appletons wool sold?
Appletons wool is sold in either crewel (2 ply) weight or tapestry (4 ply). Each of these weights is then sold in either hanks (25 g, which is 55m of tapestry weight or 180m of crewel weight) or skeins (10m of tapestry weight, 25m of crewel weight).
Skeins are usually dispatched within 1-3 days, however the larger hanks can take 1-2 weeks to dispatch as they are ordered in for each customer.
Do you have a printed colour card for Apppletons wool?
No, instead there is a set of wool sample cards sold in a handy box set. Please see my listings to order one!
Although you can see swatches on my Appletons group listings, you may view the entire chart at once on the Appletons website at appletons.org.uk/colours
Please note the colours provided online are an indication of shade, these colours are not as accurate as on a sample shade card due to variations on different computer monitors.
Do you have a printed colour card for CXC thread?
No, however as the colours are a close match for DMC colours 150-3866 (including Blanc, Ecru and B5200) you may use any DMC chart to select your CXC colours.
Is Appletons wool Colourfast?
To get technical, the colour fastness of Appletons dyes are rated as 5-6 on the ‘grey scale’ with the exception of the fluorescent dyes which are rated at 2-3.
Please note that we would always strongly recommend keeping dyed wool out of direct sunlight as, over time, it will always have an effect.
Is Appletons wool Washable?
We don’t recommend washing Appletons wool other than sponging with cold water if necessary.
As many people use Appletons crewel wool for darning and repair work, its best to wash these items gently.
Is Appletons Wool Mothproof?
All mothproofing agent have now been banned by the Environment agency due to their toxicity and harm to aquatic life. However, Appletons are currently exploring a non-toxic and safe alternative. We will let you know as soon as it is available!!
