My segmented bowls are all made from mostly exotic woods with some domestics woods used occasionally. I don't base my choice of wood on whether it is domestic or exotic, but rather how it fits in with the rest of the bowl.

I create these bowls by repeatedly sanding and gluing together selected small pieces of wood in various patterns. I do this until it has become a full sized bowl blank and then I let it sit for several months so that it will stabilize to the ambient moisture. I then do a rough turn on the lathe, followed by letting it sit for a couple more months. Then I do a final turning, apply several coats of finishing agent, and apply a felt pad on the bottom so that it will not scratch any surface it is sitting on.

Sizes range from about 6 inches in diameter to about 10 inches and with a height usually about 2 1/2 inches. The type of finish(es) used on a particular bowl will be listed in that bowl's description.

Shipping is now included in the price of the bowl. If you buy three or more bowls there is a 10% discount.

I love making laminated bowls out of exotic woods

I fell in love with exotic woods about 40 years ago when I had no idea what they were but ordered some from a magazine (this was WAY before the Internet) and was just blown away at how beautiful they can be.

I made a few items out of individual woods but found that I liked combining them, so over the years I've developed the technique that I use to make the laminated bowls you see here.
