At the core of who I am, I am an artisan. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t creating something, and while I’ve explored many mediums, it was creating with fabric that became my passion.
Picasso is attributed with saying “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”
I began ‘learning the rules’ to traditional quilt making over 40 years ago hand piecing, appliquéing, and quilting for family and friends. With each new creation I gained proficiency and added new skills to my quilter’s toolbox. There honestly isn’t an aspect to quilt making that I don’t enjoy and I love the colors and feel of fine fabrics and the many ways I’ve learned to put them together in a pleasing way.
When our 'nest' emptied, I finally had my own creative space in which to play full time with fabric and when my studio time became consistent, the breadth and depth of my quilting skills grew exponentially. I think it’s always been within my artistic nature to create, not merely imitate, so as my skills and confidence grew, I began stepping out beyond the ‘pattern’ and began creating my own designs.
When inspired by quilting challenges, I couldn’t resist exploring how to bring an idea to completion and I’m grateful for the awards that resulted from my efforts. A few are featured above.
My quilts have been on display and earned recognition in numerous local quilt shows, national juried quilt shows, and local juried art shows and have appeared in four publications, including with an article for American Quilter Magazine. At the invitation of The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (Winchester, VA), in 2016, fifteen of my quilts hung in an “Art in the Halls” solo-artist showing of my works and I’m honored that many of my quilts have found new homes in private collections both across the United States and in the United Kingdom.
