Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sea salt and table salt?

Sea salt is produced from evaporating water from oceans or salt water lakes with little or no processing. Depending on the source of the water, sea salt may contain various trace minerals with small amounts of calcium, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, and iron. The various minerals add flavor and color to sea salt.

Table salt is mined from underground salt deposits and undergoes heavy processing, which strips the salt of its natural minerals. It is ground down into fine grains, bleached and treated with anticaking agents to prevent clumping.

Is it normal for my sea salt to stick together or get get clumpy?

Yes, this can happen. We do not use any anti-caking agents or pouring agents in our products. Our products are sold in jars without “shaker” tops. The salts are meant to be pinched and sprinkled by hand or with a spoon. If your salt sticks together, it can be easily loosened by shaking the jar or stirring to break up clumps. Keeping your salt away from heat or humidity will avoid this from happening in the future. Adding rice to the salt jar is another long-standing remedy to prevent or reduce clumping. We recommend using brown rice for light-colored salts and white rice for dark -colored salts, so it is easily distinguishable in the jar.

Does sea salt ever expire?

No, when properly stored and kept free from contaminants, sea salt does not go bad. Infused or flavored sea salts will generally keep for up to 2 years, and though the flavors might reduce over an extended period of time, the salt itself is still usable.

If sea salt changes color, is it still safe to use?

Yes, after prolonged storage, sea salt may change color somewhat, but it will still be safe to consume if it has been stored properly.

Why is solar evaporation better?

There are three main ways to make sea salt: baking, boiling, and evaporating. Baking or boiling salt water would produce salt more quickly, but these methods loose the crystal quality and a lot of the minerals. Solar evaporation is a natural process, which uses only the suns energy to remove the water and leave behind pure, flakey, salt crystals.

Are the sea salt blends gluten free?

We do not use any flour or wheat in any of our salts. All our ingredients are listed clearly on the labels. Please read the labels carefully, especially if you are prone to allergies. Some individuals may find that other ingredients could cause a sensitivity. If you have questions about how an ingredient may impact you, please work with your healthcare professional.

Custom and personalized orders

Yes! Please reach out to us at Info@saltflow.com. Custom orders usually take additional time to prepare. Please contact us as far out from the even as possible so that we may accommodate you.

Is it normal for my sea salt to contain moisture?

Yes, this can happen. We do not use any drying agents in our products. Depending on where and how the salt was harvested and dried, it can contain some moisture. If your salt is moist and you would like it dry, you can air-dry it in an uncovered bowl on the counter, or in a low-heat oven. If you are using the oven, pre-heat to 200-250 degrees Fahrenheit. Place a thin layer of salt on a large baking sheet covered in parchment paper. Immediately turn the oven off and let dry or bake for 10-15 min with the oven on. Stir to break any clumps and continue until the salt is dried to your preference. Store cooled salts in an airtight container.
