Simone Walsh is a contemporary jewellery maker whose intricate and eco-friendly jewellery is handmade in the Adelaide hills and worn by people all over Australia and the world.
Her interest in making jewellery began over twenty years ago when Simone became intrigued after stumbling across a piece of simple but unusual jewellery.
“I decided to try to figure out how it was constructed and after a few hours with some wire and pliers I was hooked and wanted to learn more!” Simone said.
Simone began her jewellery making career in her home town of Adelaide, where she initially began teaching herself some jewellery making basics way back in 1992.
Soon after she decided to undertake full time study in this field, ultimately completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts with a Jewellery and Metal major at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney.
Twenty years after getting started Simone’s jewellery business is now a full time concern. Her designs are sold to customers all over the world via her website and other online outlets. She also sells through a select number of retail stores around Australia and at occasional designers’ markets.
Her jewellery is all genuinely handmade by Simone, who individually makes each piece in her Adelaide hills studio. None of Simone's work is made by simply assembling mass-produced components.
Simone uses metalwork techniques to create her jewellery, such as intricate saw-piercing, etching and gilding. Favourite materials include sterling silver, gold and gemstones.
Most of the precious metal used in Simone's designs is recycled and she aims to operate an eco-friendly business.
Simone said, “It’s not always easy being a self-employed craftsperson, but it is very rewarding work. I’m very happy to be doing this for a living twenty years after first getting started.”
