Everything's Connected
It's all connected, and it all has place.
That title is the first part of a geography axiom, BTW, Tobler's Law or the first law of geography.
I was destined to be a geographer because you don't have to limit your interests in geography. Everything, everything there is to be interested in fits either in human or physical geography in some way. Russ and I were destined to do this together because he is as omni-curious as I am.
Our store name, Six Degrees, has a little geography theme as well, the idea that you can get from one person, place or thing that exists to any other in six or fewer connections. What does that have to do with our Etsy store? Well, artistically Russ and I are interested in a little bit of everything, and when you are, you begin to see the interconnected relationships.
Right now our shop has mostly vintage, and vintage handmade. It probably always will have a lot. We love the quality of things that have stood the test of time, and we respect the time that people give to the arts and crafts they love.
So many arts are rare and dying because the amount of time they consume is incomprehensible by today's standards. The first time the shop was taken over with vintage, I was looking for things to up-cycle and got all caught up in rescue. That's an understatement! I won't touch a really fine piece of work or culture though. The stuff I upcycle will not be rare, or if it is, it didn't come to me in perfect or restorable condition.
The shop was closed for a time because we had a house fire and lost pretty much everything. We committed to replacing as much stuff as we could with thrift store, second hand and estate sale finds. In the year while we were looking for a home that fit our needs and budget, I was spending all the time that I wasn't looking for a house working that commitment to find "tha stuff" in thrift stores. Having a goal, but a disrupted life is one way to get roped into a mess, or at least that's how I did. You're out there looking for a needle in a haystack, right? So, if you find something that may fit your new life, the sense is that you should buy it, because who knows when you might come by something better and if you don't use it you can sell it right? Yeah, we finally found a fixer upper and we were blessed with too much stuff before we finished fixing... so now we are on a second round of mostly vintage offerings with Six Degrees. Vintage, antiques and the stories that go with them are near and dear to us, so, we will always have those things, but we will also branch out eventually and see what else works. While doing so, we hope to provide you with many things that you will love as much as we do.
