Announcement    Happy November! We just edited our shipping times due to several factors. It's possible that we may be able to get things out sooner. If you're in a hurry, give us a shout and find out. And, as always, we hope we have something special in the shop you'll love and will make your day a little better and before you know it, everything will be a little brighter.

We expect longer delivery times this year. Please order purchases that are time sensitive early. November and the first week in December are the best times if you;re looking for a december 25 delivery.

Thank you for stopping by our shop to look back in vintage awesomeness and other stuff while we're all looking forward in hope and optimism that the next year will bring health, peace and joy to all.

We do ship USPS normally. They've had a lot to deal with lately. Hopefully that will be under control soon. If you prefer another carrier, please ask. We can probably do that.

We call our shop Six Degrees because everything's connected and we're pretty much interested in all of it. Recycling, up-cycling and rescuing things is a strong influence, but we sometimes work with new supplies and there’s no telling what we might offer, by our own hands or the hands of others. Sometimes when we are out there pounding the pavement for the right thing to up-cycle we find things that need no improvement, only someone to appreciate their beauty, history or ambiance. Rescuing these treasures has become a major focus with rewarding results. We love most arts and crafts as well as vintage treasures. We do what we can and appreciate the things we can’t and hope that we can be of service to you through the year for all of your special occasions and holidays.

No matter what we offer, we like it to be a good value. We are pretty diligent about pricing things well, but every so often we get mislead or offer a treasure that we’re not sure how to price, so we will gladly consider offers. Be sure to make your case as to what makes your price fair and please remember that anything priced $25 or less is already low for the time and fees involved in bringing it to you. As long as it's allowed, we also consider trading treasures. If you see something you like in our shop and think we might be interested in something you have to offer, we’d be glad to mull it over.

Why does Six Degrees have a charity section? Well we don't really have much room in our budget for charity. But, that's something that sounds like a cheap excuse. Almost everyone has something to give. By designating certain purchases as charity, I am able to take a little time and a small investment and turn it into an small, but bigger donation that I could not have otherwise made. By earmarking it out in the open, buyers can decide they'd like to help in that endeavor, or not. Sometimes the item itself speaks as to what the donation should be, and sometimes we just pick something to designate for a cause we believe in.

We absolutely love it when you post your own photos with your reviews!

Happy Shopping! And, if you are looking for a delivery by a certain date, please check with us about expedited shipping.

Everything's Connected

It's all connected, and it all has place.

That title is a geography axiom, BTW. I was destined to be a geographer because you don't have to limit your interests in geography. Everything, everything there is to be interested in fits either in human or physical geography in some way. Russ and I were destined to do this together because he is as omni-curious as I am.

Our store name, Six Degrees, has a little geography theme as well, the idea that you can get from one person, place or thing that exists to any other in six or fewer connections. What does that have to do with our Etsy store? Well, artistically Russ and I are interested in a little bit of everything, and when you are, you begin to see the interconnected relationships.

Right now our shop has mostly vintage, as well as vintage handmade. It probably always will. We love the quality of things that have stood the test of time, and we respect the time that people give to the arts and crafts they love. So many arts are rare and dying because the amount of time they consume is incomprehensible by today's standards. The first time the shop was taken over with vintage, I was looking for things to up-cycle and got all caught up in rescue. That's an understatement!

This time it has happened because we had a house fire and lost pretty much everything. We committed to replacing as much stuff as we could with thrift store, second hand and estate sale finds. In the year while we were looking for a home that fit our needs and budget, I was spending all the time that I wasn't looking for a house working that commitment to find "tha stuff" in thrift stores. Having a goal, but a disrupted life is one way to get roped into a mess, or at least that's how I did. You're out there looking for a needle in a haystack, right? So, if you find something that may fit your new life, the sense is that you should buy it, because who knows when you might come by something better and if you don't use it you can sell it right? Yeah, we finally found a fixer upper and we were blessed with too much stuff before we finished fixing... so now we are on a second round of mostly vintage offerings with Six Degrees. Vintage, antiques and the stories that go with them are near and dear to us, so, we will always have those things, but we will also branch out and see what else works. While doing so, we hope to provide you with many things that you will love as much as we do.

    Owner, Factotum And Dreamer

I learned to sew and craft by making clothes, furniture and accessories for my dolls with Mom, love of antiques from my grandmother, farming from my grandfather, and a fascination with how things work from my father. I am still awed by the magic.

Russ is my hero and I hope he gets a lot of time to clean cast iron and make all the art his heart sees. The Six Degrees theme of our shop represents our varied interests. Everything is connected (and we're interested in all of it.)

Shop policies

Last updated on June 3, 2021
Welcome to Six Degrees. We picked the name to emphasize our love of diversity and connection.

Our offerings will vary over time, and may include vintage items and supplies, bleach wear or silk screen and other clothing, purses, accessories, doll clothes and parts, handmade paper, paper weights, candle products, etched glass, wood and decorative items, English smocking kits and supplies, costuming of all sorts, cork people, cast birdbaths, and who knows what else. Our content will morph over time as we see what people like and develop our shop.

Six Degrees Shop is about connectivity. The most seemingly unrelated things often have strong, important connections. Tobler's Law "Everything is connected. Near things are more connected than far things" is a simple yet powerful thing to remember. It's why we have charity offerings, and it's a reason recycling of vintage, supplies and tools, and up-cycling are an important part of what we hope to accomplish through the store.

Karen is also in the process of re-working Smocking instruction booklets that she produced when she was teaching English Smocking to offer a .pdf instruction booklet. Please join us in this adventure, perhaps it will be a long journey!

Shipping
We use recycled packaging when possible. It's a Reduce, Reuse, Re-cycle decision (not a cost saver because of the extra time involved). If you have a preference for new packaging, let us know and we will try to accommodate.

We pack things well. Most often we ship USPS Priority as still the best balance between cost and speed, with 2-3 day US delivery, tracking and $100 insurance. Priority rates begin at $8 and we pay fees on top of that. The included insurance covers loss or damage while it is in the carrier's hands. The carrier requires proof of damage with photos of the item and packaging for any claims.

On some of the more expensive to ship items we will check to see if there are less expensive options. Recent price increases on items in boxes that are more than a square foot or above 4 pounds increase the number of items to which this applies. Items in this size and range will not likely ship priority and may take 1-5 days longer to arrive, especially in during high volume times.

We're happy to combine orders to reduce shipping, but increasingly, this works to the greatest advantage on small lightweight items.

We gladly quote international or same day shipping on request. International shipping procedures are going through some changes right now, and so those policies are subject to change. Fast and far shipping options are pricey and we’re sorry, but we don't have any control over that. We don't have control of anything once your order leaves our hands.

There are hidden costs and extra fees that the customer doesn't see in shipping. We make our best effort to quote the customer only what it costs us to ship.

We're consolidating some thing. Due to ever increasing shipping costs, we will be combining some of our lower cost supplies and other items that are not currently listed in order to make them a better value. This will happen as we have available time. If something you want is no longer listed, feel free to ask and we'll prioritize it. Many of these items were less expensive than our current lowest cost to ship.

Prepaid local pick-up is allowed when practical. In that situation, we will ask to take a photograph of you with your order for our records. And, if you're buying props for a set or have any other reason to buy hundreds of items (or everything in the shop :) :) we could definitely work with you on a personal delivery method and cost!

Shipping really is outside our control. We recommend that you purchase additional insurance for items valued at above the $100 covered by Priority shipping to cover your risk.

For same day rush we add a $40.00 service charge above the carrier's delivery fee for each "drop everything and make a special trip to the express service store now" trip that we make. If you order several things to go at the same time, that would still be just 1 fee.

Photographs are the primary description. We try to get camera angles that show size as accurately as possible. Please look at the photos carefully and ask questions about anything that is not clear.
