skiprat.co – upcycled eco-design furniture art ~ by Sally Richards
Bit of history: I am a free-lance Artist and Art Psychotherapist. In 1995 I co-managed a unique little shop in Sheffield called ‘Sasha – Art Collective’. Along with painted furniture art, it had a wildly colourful extravaganza of stock items and supported local artists - positioned in the trendy quarter of the city. The furniture is back with ‘skiprat.co’ ~ my signature and a resurrected version of Sasha furniture. In 2012 a production studio relocated to Hebden Bridge.
Is it Art or Craft: My artwork would best be described as ‘environment art’. I believe there is a place for good solid, yet sadly, unwanted furniture that has been lovingly reinvented and brought into a world of colourful and zany objects d’art.
Upcycling: Kitsch, it may also be, but skiprat.co eco-design furniture is fresh and inspiring compared to the safe beiges of the veneered-glue-board that we have become so accustomed to living with throughout the noughties. Recycling is a core part of my nature and making do and mend has been with me forever! For practical durability all furniture is treated with at least 3 coats of polyurethane varnish. Each piece is, of course, totally unique. I take a personal challenge working to create pieces that are ‘different’; and absorb influences from far and wide, now and then. Each piece has my signature mark prior to the glazing process and is finished underneath and at the back in purples and glittered with stardust.
I take commission work.
