Making the Dark Tower Timeline and Maps

For the last couple of years I have visualised in my mind the time-travelling and world-hopping journeys taken by the intrepid travellers of Roland's Ka-Tet.

In 2016 I decided to do something about bringing these visualisations to life, with the intention of making myself a poster. I purchased electronic book versions of all volumes in Stephen King's magnum opus, The Dark Tower, and used them to compile detailed notes of all the key elements of the story. The e-book versions allowed me to search for names, places, dates, and so on which greatly assisted in the compilation of information.

A started with the idea of having a single poster containing all the time line information superimposed on a collection of maps of both Mid-World and the various versions of America that appear in the story. I created many sketches and scribbles on numerous sheets of paper and it soon became clear that I would need a mural to achieve my aim!

Instead I chose to divide the work up into parts: the timeline on one poster, and the maps on another.

I began with the timeline. Using my notes I worked out a general layout using pencil and paper, and I then translated all this information onto my computer, producing the final timeline image in early 2017. To produce the poster itself, I spent time online choosing a quality print shop based in Australia. After many adjustments to colours and line widths and fonts to ensure everything was crisp and clear and legible, I sent off the image to be printed. And in May 2017, the finished timeline poster arrived on my doorstep!

As I write this it is now May 2018, and I have just received the results of the last twelve months' work: the maps of Mid World and the Multiple Americas. These are just as pleasing to me as the timeline, and I hope you enjoy them too. I have ideas for further designs, and so maybe by 2019 to 2020 there may be further visualisations to choose from.

I very much hope you enjoy these artworks. They were certainly a labour of love and I am very pleased with the result.

Special thanks to the Dark Tower communities on FaceBook, Twitter, and Reddit who all provided excellent feedback on an earlier draft of the timeline, and also snippets of the maps as they came into being.
