What Do You Do With Alpacas?
It all started by looking for something to raise on our 200 acre farm in SE Ohio. Alpacas were the answer, but what do you do with them? When I acquired my first alpacas in 1999, I was determined to learn to spin. I had always wanted to learn to weave and had a grandmother who was an avid knitter and crocheter.
So learn to spin I did, then I learned to knit and to weave. Then I saw gorgeous hand-dyed alpaca yarns that another breeder produced and decided I needed to learn to do that as well.
I found a local mill who did a fabulous job turning my best fleeces into yarn that dyes up beautifully and they have been processing my yarns since 2010. They also spin my coarser fleeces into a corespun rug yarn from which I weave wonderful rugs, in natural alpaca as well as hand-dyed colors.
From once having had over 50 alpacas, we have recently downsized and stopped breeding alpacas. I still have some fleeces to be processed into rug yarn, but most of my best fleeces are listed here as my hand-dyed yarns.
