I started sewing when we moved from Australia to Belgium and I found myself at home alone with little kids, some very ugly furniture, and some even uglier weather. I spent a lot of time inside, and I started sewing cushion covers and clothes for my kids. My fabric stash started to grow!
When looking for design inspiration, I turned to my daughter's drawings, and started using free motion embroidery to applique her designs - mostly flowers and trees and big smiley faces. I sent cushion covers to all our friends and family, and started selling them to friends of friends. I got brave and decided to start out on Etsy in 2011. I haven't looked back!
My biggest sellers now are the "Anniversary Trees". These are original hoop art pieces featuring a tree which you can literally watch 'grow' as you add a leaf on each year. I love that this is a perpetual gift, and that it's sentimental yet subtle. My husband and I love our own little tree, and argue over who gets to choose the next leaf :) I personally cut and choose each leaf that I send with each order (60!). My fabric stash is always being raided, and I am always on the lookout for new perfect 'leaf worthy' designs.
As well as making unique applique cushion covers and hoop art from my own designs, I also love to sew custom made fabric art pieces. I take a child's drawing and "materialise" it using carefully selected fabrics and free motion embroidery on my sewing machine. I love the way you can draw with a sewing machine, and the technique suits kids art so well. I love that people entrust me with their kids drawings, and I work so hard to stay true to the quirkiness that kids are able to impart to their drawings.
