Why we created our innovative single use tea infuser
Problem:
Many paper tea bags are treated with epichlorohydrin, a compound considered a potential carcinogen by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Paper tea bags contain low grade tea known as "fannings" or "dust." and often bagged in bleached paper material that can add chemicals.
Almost ALL teabag manufacturers use plastic in their teabags There are cellulose and thermo-plastic fibers in the bags which are necessary to seal the product.
The “silky” or “mesh” tea bags are most commonly made from food grade nylon, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), or PLA ( made from starch, usually corn) plastic.
The plastic teabag at 169 F begin leach out when steeped in boiling water (212 F or 100C)—which is the recommended way to brew a good cup of tea.
All plastic concerns us because it has Estrogenic Activity (EA), meaning it mimics the hormone estrogen in the body. Chemicals with EA have been linked to all kinds of health problems, including:
early puberty in females, reduced sperm counts, altered functions of reproductive organs, obesity, altered sex-specific behaviors, and increased rates of some breast, ovarian, testicular, and prostate cancers.
Also another drawback for using plastic tea bags that they are not biodegradable or recyclable.
