Traces of fire - wood-fired ceramics
toscAnna comes from Anna and the italian word for Tuscany - Toscana.
I moved to Tuscany in 1989 and since there I am creating ceramic pots. In 1991 my husband and I built our small wood-fired kiln.
Wood firing is the oldest firing method. Since humans first began to understand how fire hardened clay, we have been making ceramics, both in pits and in wood kilns. Now, with so many fuel options available to the potter, wood-fired kilns are more of a choice than a necessity. While wood firing isn’t easy and needs a lot of time and work, the results are incomparable. The work in wood kilns reveals the story of the firing, with pieces showing ash deposits and the path of the flame through the kiln. We choose the wood-firing specialy using the unglazed parts of the pots as a unique decorative style.
The clay used for the ceramics comes from England; although you can find a lot of clay in Italy, but there is none for high temperature - stoneware - and in particular for wood-firing.
Everything in my shop is totally handmade. I don't use molds or something else. The pots are thrown on the wheel. The food safe glazes are made in the workshop; all pots are done with love and care.
My ceramics are characterized by functionality; I love to cook using my wonderful ceramics and cleaning them in the dishwasher daily. They do their job and at the same time they look beautiful.
Some years ago I created my first necklace with my handmade ceramic beads .....and loved it.
