I started making rope in 2014 using hardware store jute twine. The twine was thick and full of contaminants. It took a long time to pick out the junk and the twine was thick and inconsistent. I knew from the beginning that I'd need to find a cheap, reliable source for a much higher quality of jute twine or yarn.
Eventually I found a supplier of high quality, clean jute yarn. I buy spools of 59400 feet fine jute. With my supply of yarn I started to perfect my manufacturing process to produce high quality jute rope. Each hank is made one at a time by me. I inspect the threads before doing the twist and inspect the rope before cutting the new rope loose from the machine. The rope is inspected again during the dry conditioning process.
I use the rope I make. I've been into rope bondage for a number of years now. I've tied with 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm rope I've made. I prefer the natural jute over the store bought synthetics I started with. I enjoy tying in private and appropriate public venues for aesthetics, function, instruction, fun, and form.

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

Jute is a biodegradable product. It can be machine washed in a delicates bag or dishwasher but must be stretched while drying. Failure to stretch the rope will result in shrinking and that shrinking will be uneven.
To stretch, wrap the rope around table or chair legs tightly. You'll need to tighten it occasionally until fully dried.

Rope balms and conditioners may be applied according to the manufacturers instructions to soften and protect the rope from wear.
Mineral oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, beeswax, and other products can be used alone or in combination as conditioners but there is no guarantee that any conditioning product will not harm the rope.
Some products can go bad over time leading to premature end of life for the rope.

Jute rope should be stored in loose curves. Tight bends in the jute weakens the jute fibers. Just like creasing a piece of paper cannot be undone and breaks the paper fibers at the crease, jute fibers are similarly susceptible to wear.
I recommend not bending your rope for storage more than a 2 inch diameter. Use as few bends as possible.
Keep your jute dry.

Are oils used in the production of rope?

Nothing is added to the jute during the rope making process. Jute Batching Oil is not required in the process I use to make rope. Larger manufacturers that make huge spools of rope on an automated machine and then cut rope to the desired length require such oil for their machines.
Each hank of rope is made one at a time and regularly inspected for quality.
It is possible that the jute yarn used to make the rope has come in contact with JBO in its manufacturing.
Rope made with JBO should be washed prior to use.

Is your rope free of allergens?

The quick answer is no.
Jute is a grass and therefore anyone with grass allergies may have a reaction to the jute on their skin.
If you are concerned about allergies, please contact me to discuss it further.
