Wallflower Yarns grew from my passion for fiber arts. I have been fascinated with yarn since I was a young child and have been amazed with the choices of colors available.
My fondest memory was during a family vacation to Greenfield Village near Dearborn, Michigan. My father was a huge fan of anything history so most of our vacations were to historical places. During this visit to the village, they were doing demonstrations at the mill. A lady dressed for the time period was prepping silk worms for spinning. I remember watching her in fascination, wondering how they were going to get string out of that tight cocoon. To my amazement, she was able to get it started and began spinning it into a tiny thread. My parents urged me forward so we could see other things, but my attention was still drawn to the lady.
On another visit, we were fortunate enough to be there when they were spinning wool from their sheep. I watched in fascination while the ladies spun their wool. From then on, I was determined to learn how to spin wool on my own wheel. This past year I was fortunate enough to get plenty of sales in my crochet shop to be able to afford my own wheel and have been spinning every type of wool I can get my hands on since.
From spinning, I naturally turned to dyeing my own yarns. I enjoy spinning the hand dyed rovings that are available, but wanted to control the colors better. I used Kool Aid to dye my first batch of yarn and was totally hooked and started looking for more vibrant dyes so that I could make brighter colors.
I wanted a shop that was different from others that I have admired so I blended my passions for reading and history with my passions for spinning and dyeing. Each colorway is named in a way that represents the era that I love to read about. You will find Lords and Ladies among the mix as well as names of dances from that time period.
I hope you enjoy visiting my shop. Please take time to read through the descriptions so that you could see why I chose the tagline "a waltz of color in every skein"
