Soft sculpture and toys designed and handmade in Australia by textile artist, Margeaux Davis.
My name is Margeaux Davis. I make cloth dolls, creatures and stuffed toys using discarded fabric scraps, old woollen blankets, remnants and worn out clothing. Many of my designs are available as digital sewing patterns, for you to download and make at home.
I find inspiration everywhere; old folk tales, song lyrics, children's story books, and of course, the natural world. I've always loved anything old or natural or from another time, and anything that just seems a bit magical or evokes a kind of longing or sadness. I think that's beautiful.
When my children were very young, I made them some toys. My first creations were a whale, bunny and a moth. These first stuffed toy attempts were pretty wonky and made from old clothes, but they were loved. I think a big part of their appeal for my boys was that they were made by their mother.
So now, several years and many prototypes later, I've created sewing patterns for my soft toy designs, so that other children can enjoy a toy made by someone who loves them.
My professional background is in environmental education, working as a park ranger; talking, writing and thinking about the natural world. I now spend my days making soft sculpture creatures and dolls, and designing soft toy sewing patterns from the tiny front room of my old house, surrounded by macadamia nut farms and cow paddocks, on the far north coast of New South Wales, Australia.
My digital sewing patterns are available here in my Etsy store and my cloth dolls and soft sculpture can be found at www.willowynn.com (or click the link below).
