THE LERWICK LACE SHAWL ebook is one I’m very pleased to offer knitters, it is a direct interpretation of a Shetland shawl of about 1890 – 1910. Made of a fine hand-spun 2 ply wool, this came to me in rather a sorry state, with holes and weak areas. However, it was easy to see the high quality of its beautiful design. This sought after small book is now out of print and only available as a .pdf
The more I studied this lovely shawl the more there was to learn from it and to absorb for future lace projects; so I intend it here to be the basis for a series of related designs that knitters can either work from directly; or, by referring to these examples, gain a clearer understanding of some of the calculations and considerations involved (such as yarn choice, construction method and shaping), so as to be more confident in their own design work.
Finally, any serious contemplation of antique Shetland Lace must include considering the woollen thread* from which it was made, and any research into this leads one only to better appreciate the lives and methods involved in sheep-keeping and wool processing in those distant days of over a hundred years ago. Many interesting things of relevance can yet be gleaned from direct reference to 19th & early 20th century sources so to this end, I have added Appendices concerning 'Running and Rooing' Shetland sheep, an ancient, early farming practice that was widespread there until at least the 1950s; and some moving portrayals of Shetland knitters from the 1850s and late 1880s, which are both informative and poignant.
Information is given on the pages above as images regarding yarns.
