The Club Bio: Club Colours FC
Nickname: The Pressmen (or The Ink-Stained Eleven) Founded: 1886 Location: The Essex/London Borderlands (The "Gateway to the East")
The Origins
Founded in the autumn of 1886, Club Colours FC began not on a pitch, but on the floor of the Albion Press Works near the Essex marshes. The original squad was comprised entirely of master compositors, lithographers, and apprentice "printer’s devils."
Legend has it the team’s first "home" kits were simply their white work shirts, heavily stained with the black and green inks of the Saturday morning broadsheet run. While other teams played for glory, the Pressmen played for the dignity of the trade—and the right to a pint of Essex ale in the "The Typesetter’s Arms" after the final whistle.
The Home Ground: "The Inkpot"
Located just a stone’s throw from the Thames, their ground was colloquially known as The Inkpot due to the dark, silty mud of the marshes that frequently ruined the leather match balls. It was a site of intimidation for visiting "West End" teams, who weren't fond of the industrial soot and the fierce East End winds.
Playing Style
Known for a "precise and methodical" game—much like the machinery they operated—The Pressmen were famous for their intricate passing, which local reporters compared to the rhythmic ticking of a Columbian press. They never missed a deadline, and they rarely missed the back of the net.
