About Me...
Hello and welcome!
I'm a polymer clay artist and author of "Miniature Cake Creations" living in the Southeast of England with my hubby and a mischievous bunny.
MY POLYMER CLAY STORY BEGINS IN 2010/11...
...when my mother in law handed me my first blocks of FIMO. At the time, I had a growing interest in baking, which translated into almost an obsession for making miniature cakes and cake-themed jewellery.
In 2012/13 I started sharing my work on Youtube, both as a way to teach but also to document my own progress and therefore learn at the same time; techniques which are now widely used by other artists as well.
In October 2019 my first book “Miniature Cake Creations” was published by GMC Publications and I saw my first collaboration with “Doll House & Miniature Scene” magazine, for which I've written over 25 tutorials.
I've also written tutorials for "Bead & Jewellery" magazine, and my work has appeared in other publications such as "People's Friend" and "Baking Heaven".
WHEN I'M NOT OBSESSING OVER CAKES...
I’m also sculpting tiny air dry clay houses and shops inspired by the three countries I've lived in, by my travels and by places I'd like to visit.
For some time now I longed to work with a more natural material that reflected my love for the planet and that allowed me more freedom and spontaneity as an artist and I'm so happy I've found it!
HANDMADE WITH LOVE
All my pieces are individually sculpted by myself from polymer clay or air dry clay, hand-painted and hand-finished by myself making each one unique. I don't use moulds unless I made the master myself, and this will be for a handful of items that I offer, and will only be in part. Even things like tiny strawberries are individually sculpted so that each one has a slightly different look. I dedicate a lot of time and attention to each single one of my pieces so that you can have something expertly made that no one else in the world has.
I never considered myself a miniaturist - or even an artist for a long time - I saw myself as a "sculptural illustrator" because I saw my clay work as an extension of my life-long passion for story telling, not separate from it.
I never cared for precision or realism. I cared for expression, usually through textures and colours.
I'm a one woman band. I am the designer, sculptor, photographer, writer and short little human that packs and takes her babies to the post office once they've found a new home.
It's always a bittersweet experience, to part. But I know you will love them just as much as I loved making them.
WHEN I'M NOT SCULPTING
I’m listening to music, singing, painting (usually more food, or buildings where food is prepared - haha), playing guitar or piano (for fun!) reading or writing. Some of my favourite authors are Charlotte Brontë, Rachel King, Eileen Ramsay, Alice Hoffman, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Elio Vittorini and Jules Verne. I enjoy doing a bit of baking, tennis, travelling and spending time with my bunny bun bun.
I hope you will find something that connects with you in my little shop,
Thank you so much for stopping by,
Have a lovely day,
Maive
