Crafting with sustainable and recycled materials in the old coal shed
Hello I'm Miles, working with my partner Jess, we have created a range of items for the home, all made from reclaimed and sustainable materials.
My workspace is the old coal shed, which we've turned into a cosy little workshop, here in Hull, East Yorkshire. We make and sell décor for the home, gifts and pet accessories.
Our story began in 2011, when someone gave Jess a Sock Monkey, and we thought it'd be a lovely little kit for adults and children alike to make their own Sock Monkey at home.
Around 3 years later, I saw some ornate chalkboard signs in a pub, and decided we should change direction and begin to make chalkboards, we became one of the UK's biggest selling online chalkboard retailers.
But due to the pandemic, everything stopped, as our local suppliers couldn't get source us high quality base materials, and we needed to change tack again.
We noticed that Jess' sister's elderly toy poodle, Pepi, was having difficulty climbing onto the sofa, so I made him some little steps from some old bits of wood, and shared a photo of him using the steps online.
Interest rocketed and since then, we have been making the pet steps and all other kinds of items using reclaimed wood. We have branched out into also offering custom made and bespoke items for customers.
