Mrs Maven and her philosophy of making....
I've always made things, since I was tiny, it was a way of life in our house. I grew up with parents who would make whatever furniture they needed - literally cutting up the sofa to make it a new shape - I'm not joking, you never quite knew what you'd come home to after school!
They were always creative but never wasteful, that thought has stayed with me. I was lucky, they encouraged me when I said I wanted to study fashion - not the usual choice for a quiet girl from a small town in Somerset. So off I went to college and discovered patterncutting, it was a light bulb moment - things made sense! The joy of starting with a flat piece of paper and transforming it into a 3D wearable creation satisfied my creativity and practical streak all in one go. A (long) stint in London followed working in the fashion industry, which was interesting but ultimately unsatisfying - clothes were just becoming too disposable, the craft of making slowly being devalued in the name of speed.
So now I create my own patterns. Maven Patterns. My philosophy is just to make things I LOVE, and that YOU will love too! Clothes that will demand to be worn again and again, so we Makers can enjoy the process of making and that hunt for the perfect piece of fabric.
So get out your scissors and thread up that sewing machine!
