My story
On a trip to Venice with my husband I visited many of the beautiful mask shops in the city. While I loved the traditional designs, the artist in me couldn’t help but imagine what I would do. I had so many ideas that when I returned home I began to sketch some of them out and researching mask making to put them into practice. I experimented with a variety of methods before settling on one that worked the best for me.
I started making masks for my own amusement, decorating my home, and making gifts for friends and family. I began to become a little obsessed, trying out different mediums, and even buying furniture to exclusively display my creations. I loved making my masks, but I was starting to run out of room, and it wasn’t until my sister’s wedding that the idea to sell my work came about.
I had made two masks for her and her husband as cake toppers, each one decorated to reflect their personalities and what they loved the most. The masks got a lot of attention, and some very lovely comments from the guests. It made me realise that there may be others who want to celebrate their fandoms in this way. I also received my first commission from a guest at the wedding who was interested in custom masks for a D&D campaign. It was a much more ambitious project than I had ever taken on before, but I enjoyed the challenge and decided that this was something I would love to do more of. So I set up my Etsy shop so I can keep making masks and others can enjoy them.
My process
I have two methods for making my masks;
Standard forms - My standard forms (like my half masks) are made using a similar method to venetian artists. The mask shape is moulded from modelling clay and then a negative mould is cast with plaster. This plaster mould is then used to create my paper mache mask blanks. I coat my masks in a homemade gesso and sand to a smooth finish ready for decorating.
I use a variety of methods to decorate my masks from acrylic paints, decoupage and metal flake gilding. I also add embellishments to some of my masks, many of which are my own designs.
Custom mask forms – I can make unique custom mask forms to meet your specifications. These masks require me to make a positive mould from modelling clay which I then use directly to make the mask form. The positive mould can only be used once so each custom mask form is unique. From there I follow the same methods as above.
