In April 2014, I was fortunate enough to first meet my beautiful wife Yvonne in Melbourne, Australia. Prior to this event, I didn't know "my ass from my elbow" in respect of precious stones, jewellery, minerals, etc. I have worked in the construction industry for over 20 years as a cost consultant and up to the point where I met my wife, if anyone had invited me to go to a Gem and Mineral show, I would probably have uttered a few choice words in their direction.
Yvonne slowly introduced me to the industry over many Gem & Mineral shows around Victoria, New South Wales & Tasmania during 2014 & 2015. One of the most striking things for me during that time was the extraordinary markup on jewellery from cost of goods to the ultimate retail price and there is valid reason for the many platforms like Etsy to bring better value to the end user.
We moved to the US with our young family in early 2016 and pretty much since then, Yvonne has been hounding me (in a nice way of course) to set up my own online shop and even design my own line of mens jewellery. Wishful thinking when you have a full time job and two young kids in diapers.
Yvonne has recently re-energised her wholesale business and prides herself not just on the authentic nature of her product but also on cutting out the numerous middle "individuals" and their associated markups and bringing the raw material directly from the mine to the customer. From time to time, when the raw material is good enough, she will get the stone cut and set as jewellery.
