I want to make this recipe but I don't have any shallots or the fancy lemon oil. From what I do have on hand, I was thinking I'd replace garlic for the shallots and add lemon juice with the wine. Do you think garlic would totally clash with the other flavors? I love food, but I'm not the greatest in the kitchen!

Garlic will be fine, but use less than you would of the shallots. Shallots have a more gentle flavor.

Thanks mindless! Great suggestion. (and I hear ya loud and clear, Bonne!).

I would suggest regular white onion for the shallots and not garlic--a very different taste...shallots are like very mild onions...I suppose the lemon juice would be ok, but maybe some lemon zest shaved in there too, the juice adds water to the mix and may dilute the sauce...

Garlic wouldn't be a good flavor trade for the shallots. If you have white onion, that would be better.

uh, shallots are in the onion family, not garlic. add some lemon to the olive oil to make the fancy oil. simple really!

I wish I had an onion, but I don't. Hmm... so no to the garlic? Maybe I should look for another recipe...

What are you making?

And for what it's worth, garlic, onions, shallots, and leeks are all alliums (which are part of the lily family.)
