I'm looking for a reasonably priced torch kit. Has anyone found a good set for a reasonable price?

I'm think acetylene/air, but I'm open.

Thanks!

I would buy a jeweler's torch (do some research on torches on Orchid ganoksin.com), then get everything else at the local welding supply - you'll have to fill the tanks there anyway....

Does that set only do small pieces? It looks tiny.....

Hi kelli - I googled the item number 23-1001C and came up with sellers.

The Smith torch is about $100 - $120 - then you have to buy the tanks, regulators, hoses. Regulators are about $90 each and you need one per tank. I also have flashback arrestors on my hoses - another $35. I don't recall how much the tanks were - you can rent them, but that seems more expensive in the long run.

You can buy the entire Smith Little Torch kit from Rio for about $500. (Much cheaper from a welding supply store, plus they will hook it all up for you.)

for what's it's worth - I tossed my Smith Little Torch - I just couldn't get the heat out of it that I needed for some of my larger pieces.

khmetal, that's what I am concerned about. The pieces I want to do are a little larger, so I don't want to be limited by a small torch.

Thanks WireYourWorld. I'll check it out.....

I bought a Hoke (a long time ago), with an adapter kit. The Hoke came with 5 tips - plus you can always take the tip off entirely(!) - the adapter kit is another 5 tips made from hypodermic needles - so they are pretty small.

If I were buying a torch today I would look at the Meco Midget and see what the folks on Orchid have to recommend. Also, acetylene is pretty dirty and the flame is very bright (w/ oxy) too bright for me. I have propane/oxy and it's fine. If I could have two torches my second torch would be a Smith (not the Little Torch) with a 'B' tank (acetylene).
