J’aime l’inhabituel, l’inattendu et le beau. Quand quelque chose touche mon cœur avec un morceau d’histoire, je l’achète généralement... si le prix est juste, bien sûr! Pour toucher mon cœur, il faut qu’il ait de l’utilité, et une très belle histoire. Lorsque vous achetez quelque chose chez Bateau, vous pouvez parier qu’il était important pour quelqu’un, qu’il est d’origine et qu’il a besoin d’une nouvelle maison ou d’une nouvelle utilisation. À propos, Bateau est le mot Français pour bateau, nommé d’après un autre de mes amours, la voile.
Ma vraie passion est de trouver des pièces uniques et de faire de vieilles choses nouvelles. J’ai toujours été un chasseur de trésors, même dans ma propre maison. J’aimais fouiller dans les vieilles choses que mes parents et mes grands-parents avaient recueillies. Je voulais connaître chaque pièce, son histoire et d’où elle venait. Mes parents avaient un sentiment d’histoire et d’appartenance qu’ils m’ont inculqué quand j’étais enfant. Je trouve ce même amour dans la découverte de l’histoire des autres et de leurs trésors.
En 1992, j’ai ouvert ma première boutique dans l’ancien King’s Ransom à Shreveport, LA. J’avais l’habitude de collectionner des choses et j’avais besoin d’un exutoire. Je travaillais à temps plein et aux études supérieures. Je me suis dit « eh bien, j’ai 5 minutes de plus le week-end, alors pourquoi ne pas ouvrir une petite entreprise parallèle? » Je voyageais déjà en Louisiane et au Texas pour chaque vente aux enchères de week-end que je pouvais trouver, remplissant l’arrière de ma Jeep Cherokee avec les vieux trucs poussiéreux des autres. Après environ trois ans, j’ai fermé ma boutique pour me concentrer sur ma nouvelle carrière, mais l’amour des articles vintage et la démangeaison de les réinventer sont restés avec moi.
Plus de 20 ans de carrière, de mariage et d’enfants, j’ai ouvert Bateau dans un espace de vente au détail ainsi que BateauStudioLA, une boutique Etsy. J’étais retourné à ce qu’on appelle maintenant King’s Antiques pour mon espace de vente au détail. C’était le même endroit, mais l’objectif des nouveaux propriétaires changeait, tout comme les goûts et les tendances générales. Les propriétaires espéraient ajouter plus d’art pour compléter les articles vintage. Pour la première fois depuis longtemps, j’ai recommencé à penser à la peinture et au dessin. Je me suis beaucoup inspiré de mon environnement et des choses que j’aime en Louisiane, et j’ai commencé à créer des cadeaux pour accentuer mes trouvailles anciennes, vintage et recyclées. Au départ, je pensais que j’irais avec un thème nautique, d’où le nom « Bateau », mais il est difficile de se concentrer dans une seule direction.
Bateau est une entreprise en pleine évolution et je suis toujours à la recherche de nouvelles façons de mettre à jour mon style et mes créations. I love the uncommon, the unexpected and the beautiful. When something touches my heart with a piece of history, I usually buy it…if the price is right, of course! To touch my heart, it has to have usefulness, and a really great story. When you buy something at Bateau, you can bet it was important to someone, has provenance, and needs a new home or use. By the way, Bateau is the French word for boat, named after another love of mine, sailing.
My real passion is finding unique pieces and making old things new. I have always been a treasure hunter even in my own home. I loved to dig through old things my parents and grandparents had collected. I wanted to know about each piece, its story, and where it came from. My parents had a sense of history and belonging that they instilled in me as a child. I find that same love in discovering the history of other people and their treasures.
In 1992 I opened my first shop in the old King’s Ransom in Shreveport, LA. I had a habit of collecting things and needed an outlet. I was working full time and in graduate school. I thought “well, I have an extra 5 minutes on the weekends, so why not open a little side business?” I was already traveling around Louisiana and Texas to every weekend auction I could find, filling the back of my Jeep Cherokee with other people’s dusty old stuff. After about three years, I closed my shop to focus on my new career, but the love of vintage items and the itch to reinvent them stayed with me.
Spring forward over 20 years through career, marriage, and kids, when I found myself opening Bateau in a retail space as well as BateauStudioLA, an Etsy shop. I had returned to what is now called King’s Antiques for my retail space. It was the same place, but the focus of the new owners was changing, as had general tastes and trends. The owners hoped to add more art to supplement the vintage items. For the first time in a long while, I began to think about painting and drawing again. I took a lot of inspiration from my surroundings and the things I love in Louisiana, and began to create gifts to accent my antique, vintage and upcycled finds. I originally thought I would go with a nautical theme, thus the name “Bateau”, but it’s hard to focus in only one direction.
Bateau is an evolving business and I’m always seeking new ways to update my style and my creations. Trust that every piece you pick up at Bateau comes from my love of the history, the possibility, and the artistry of the things that make up our lives.
