Finally, I've Found My Passion
Jahrelang hüpfte ich von Hobby zu Hobby und hoffte, dass etwas "hängen bleiben" würde. Erst als ich Glas entdeckte, kam alles zusammen.
Es ist eine konstante Lernkurve, die ich liebe. Aber eine Person kann nur eine bestimmte Menge Glas herstellen und behalten! Also beschloss ich, dass ich, wenn ich weiter machen wollte, anfangen musste zu verkaufen.
Mein eigenes Geschäft zu verkaufen und zu fördern, ist der schwierigste Teil der Reise. Ich bin kein Vermarkter. Es fällt mir auch schwer, Aufgaben an andere Menschen zu übergeben. Meine Buchhaltungskurse haben sich also als nützlich erwiesen. Meine Fotografie braucht ein wenig Arbeit, aber hoffentlich werden sich meine Produktbilder im Laufe der Zeit weiter verbessern. Im Moment bin ich ein bisschen eine Ein-Mann-Band.
Bisher arbeite ich mit einem Paragon Fusion-10 Glasofen. Geschmolzenes Glas braucht Zeit und Geduld, daher ist die Produktion ein langsamer Prozess. Es hilft nicht, dass sich mein Studio in einer jahrhundertealten ungeheizten Scheune in Kanada befindet und über die kalten Wintermonate geschlossen wird.
Ich hoffe, dass ich meine Ofenfläche in den nächsten ein oder zwei Jahren erweitern und die Produktion steigern kann. In der Zwischenzeit konzentriere ich mich auf die Entwicklung von Produktlinien - um zu sehen, was funktioniert und was nicht und was andere Leute lieben.
For years, I hopped from hobby to hobby, hoping something would "stick." It's not until I discovered glass that it all came together.
It's a constant learning curve, which I love. But a person can only make and keep a certain amount of glass! So I decided that if I was going to continue making, I had to start selling.
Selling and promoting my own business is the hardest part of the journey. I am not a marketer. I also have a difficult time handing duties over to other people. So my accounting courses have come in handy. My photography needs a little bit of work, but hopefully my product images will continue to improve over time. Right now I'm a little bit of a one-man-band.
So far, I am working with one Paragon Fusion-10 glass kiln. Fused glass takes time and patience, so production is a slow process. It doesn't help that my studio is in a century-old unheated barn in Canada, and shuts down over the cold winter months.
I am hoping to expand my kiln space over the next year or two, and be able to increase production. In the meantime, I am focusing on developing product lines - to see what works and what doesn't, and what other people love.
