Mokash (also known as Mokosh or Makosh) is a revered figure in Slavic mythology, the patroness of women's crafts and fertility. She is especially honoured in rituals linked to the cultivation of flax, essential for spinning and weaving.
And Mokash is more than a guardian of handwork—she is the enigmatic mistress and weaver of destiny. She spins the threads of our lives, winding them into balls that represent our fates. From the first stitch at birth to the last at death, our life’s fabric is woven by her hands. According to legend, she weaves the celestial tapestry of the world, intertwining people and events into its intricate pattern.
Slavic tradition portrays Mokash as a robust woman with powerful arms raised toward the sky. She is usually shown in yellow hues against a green background, accompanied by her tools—spinning wheel, threads—and surrounded by animals and birds.
I’ve represented Mokash as a traditional East Slavic “lialka-motanka”, a coiled or reeled doll in my design.
The bird typically associated with this motif transforms here into a stork, a revered animal symbol in Belarusan culture. Mokash holds a symbol of the Sun and Moon in her right hand, inspired by Belarusan folklore. She is encircled by ears of rye, a symbol of fertility, among which blooms the cornflower, Belarusan national flower.
Mokash's apron features stylized symbols of her own.
Below her is the inscription “Мокош” (Mokosh), rendered in the Belarusan Traditional Stitching Motifs Font*.
To the left are solar symbols associated with the goddess.
Thank you for choosing Mokash.
And Happy Stitching!
