Lassen Sie mich zunächst meinen Namen erklären. Den Spitznamen Nancy Drew habe ich durch Heirat bekommen. Ich wette, Sie wussten nicht, dass die echte Nancy Drew eine pensionierte Oma ist, die einen roten Minivan fährt, und die einzigen Rätsel, die sie löst, sind ein Häkelhaken.

Meine Liebe zum Häkeln begann über 50 Jahre. Ich wurde von meiner Mutter unterrichtet, die ein Threadie war und die schönsten Tischdecken machte. Eigentlich glaube ich nicht, dass es irgendetwas gab, was sie nicht häkeln konnte. Ich habe das Handwerk und die Kunst schon immer geliebt. Als ich mich von einem sehr stressigen Firmenjob vorzeitig zurückzog, eröffnete ich ein Kunstatelier und unterrichtete mehrere Jahre lang Malerei. Als das Malen zu meinem Vollzeitjob wurde, war Häkeln meine Art, mich zu entspannen. Das ist es auch heute noch. Ich liebe es total. Ich denke, man kann sagen, dass ich besessen bin.

Ich habe im Mai 2013 angefangen, meine Muster zu veröffentlichen, aber ich entwerfe seit meiner Kindheit Puppenkleidung. Die Inspiration für meine Entwürfe kommt von vielen Orten. Ich liebe Blumen und die Natur, und diese Dinge sind oft in meinen Entwürfen zu sehen. Manchmal ist es ein schöner Strang aus Garn oder satter Farbe, der mich zum Skizzenblock schickt.

Normalerweise beginnen alle meine Designs auf die gleiche Weise, mit einem Skizzenblock und Farbfeldern ... vielen Farbfeldern. Ich habe einen Tagesplaner mit Monatskalender und Tabs für meine Projektideen und Planung. Ich bewahre dort Skizzen und Notizen auf und speichere Fotos, Zeitschriftenausschnitte und alles andere, was meine Aufmerksamkeit erregt oder mich inspiriert. Eine Sache, die ich aus der Malerei gelernt habe, ist, eine Idee nicht zu früh zu verwerfen. Legen Sie es für ein paar Tage beiseite und kommen Sie später darauf zurück. Oft, wenn ich zurückkomme, stelle ich fest, dass die Dinge nicht wirklich so schlimm sind, wie ich dachte, oder die Probleme haben eine einfache Lösung.

Das Entwerfen hat meine Liebe zum Garnhandwerk wirklich vertieft. Manchmal möchte ich mein eigenes Design kreieren, und manchmal möchte ich mich entspannen und einfach nur häkeln. Ich liebe es, dass ich beides kann. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass das Entwerfen und Häkeln im Allgemeinen meinen Geist jung hält. Als Oma ist das wichtig. Manche Leute mögen Videospiele, Kreuzworträtsel oder Luminosity. Gib mir einfach eine Häkelnadel und einen schönen Strang Garn, und ich bin gut.

First of all, let me explain my name. I got the moniker, Nancy Drew, through marriage. I’ll bet you didn’t know that the real Nancy Drew is a retired granny, who drives a red minivan, and the only mysteries she solves involve a crochet hook.

My love of crochet started over 50 years. I was taught by my mother, who was a threadie and made the most beautiful tablecloths. Actually, I don’t think there was anything she couldn’t crochet. I’ve always loved crafting and art. When I took an early retirement from a very stressful corporate job, I opened an art studio and taught painting for several years. When painting became my full time job, crochet was my way to relax. It still is today. I totally love it. I think you can say I’m obsessed.

I started publishing my patterns in May 2013, but I’ve been designing since I was a child making doll clothes. Inspiration for my designs comes from many places. I love flowers and nature, and those things are often featured in my designs. Sometimes it’s a beautiful skein of yarn or rich color that sends me off to the sketch pad.

Usually all my designs start the same way, with a sketch pad and swatches….lots of swatches. I have a daily planner with a monthly calendar and tabs for my project ideas and planning. I keep sketches and notes there, and save photos, magazine clippings, and anything else that catches my attention or inspires me. One thing I learned from painting is not to discard an idea too soon. Set it aside for a few days and come back to it later. Often when I come back, I find things aren’t really as bad as I thought, or the problems have an easy fix.

Designing has really deepened my love of yarn crafts. Sometimes I want to create my own design, and other times I want to relax and just crochet. I love that I can do both. I feel designing and crochet in general keep my mind young. As a granny, that’s important. Some people like video games, crossword puzzles, or Luminosity. Just give me a crochet hook and a lovely skein of yarn, and I’m good.
