:: Listing Details, Condition & Measurements ::
This listing is for 1 Porcelain Gravy Boat with attached underplate in excellent vintage condition - may have an occasional bit of wear to the platinum trim here or there; otherwise pristine and the piece shows no cracks, nicks, crazing, stains or repairs.
Please note that backstamps may vary (we've identified at least 4 different versions; see photo for examples. Also, the trim and triangular accents may look black in some of the photos, but this is just an effect of shadowing; the decorations are all a lovely glittering platinum. More photos available upon request.

:: Pattern History ::
One of the most desirable Art Deco dinnerware patterns ever made, Deauville was created by Oneida Community's visionary designer Grosvenor Allen, who, inspired by the glamorous French resort town, patented the Deauville design in 1929 and first used it on Community's flatware.
Deauville porcelain dinnerware was commissioned in 1931 as a chic complement to the elegant silverware, crystal and hollowware patterns of the same name. Imported Bavarian porcelain pieces of exceptional quality— hard-paste porcelain formed into gently angled geometric shapes—e.g. 10-sided polygonal plates—were glazed in a luscious ivory cream and trimmed in platinum with Art Deco chevron / arrowhead-shaped accents (there was also a French Limoges version in white for the European market, but we specialize in the ivory/cream). This porcelain has the added advantage of not crazing.
PLEASE NOTE: All pieces in this pattern qualify for our Discount Wedding Registry Service; please inquire if interested. We actively collect this pattern and other items including matching silverware are often available; please inquire or visit our Vintage Dinnerware China, Porcelain, Glass, Retro Plastique section: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SusabellaBrownstein?section_id=6280769
:: Care & Handling ::
As with any china this fragile, and with metallic embellishment, this piece should never be used in microwaves, and we strongly recommend hand washing.
PLEASE NOTE: Vintage and antique dishes were often decorated with glazes containing varying levels of toxic substances, like lead or cadmium. If you have a concern, please research before purchasing. To minimize exposure when using vintage dinnerware, please observe the following precautions: use infrequently; do not expose to high heat, including microwaves, ovens, and dishwashers; avoid contact with acidic foods & liquids, especially if piece is cracked or crazed (slight crackling of the clear overglaze); do not use to store food or liquids; hand wash with a gentle detergent soon after use and allow to air dry.
:: Community Deauville ::
Imported Bavarian porcelain pieces of exceptional quality— hard-paste porcelain formed into gently angled geometric shapes—most pieces are octagonal—glazed in a luscious ivory cream and trimmed and decorated in platinum with pure Art Deco chevron / arrowhead-shaped accents.
There's no question why visionary designer Grosvenor Allen named this pattern after the glamorous French resort town of the same name...Deauville, France (aka the Parisian Riviera) also inspired such luminaries as Coco Chanel, who opened her 2nd shop and began her transition from hat maker to couturier there (not to mention her torrid affair with "Boy"); F. Scott Fitzgerald, who placed Tom and Daisy's honeymoon scene in The Great Gatsby there; and it was almost certainly the basis for the casino in the James Bond film, "Casino Royale."
:: Oneida Community ::
Born out of an utopian 19th century religious commune in Oneida NY run by the Perfectionists, (seriously!) the Community Plate line included some of my favorite silverplated flatware designs. Many were designed by Grosvenor Allen, and included 1914’s ‘Patrician’, 1917’s architectural ‘Adam’, 1921’s eponymous ‘Grosvenor’, 1923’s Bird of Paradise, 1929’s gorgeous matching Deauville, 1930’s modernistic Noblesse, the feminine Lady Hamilton in 1932, and the regal Coronation in 1936.
