Vianne, is well known for it's glass making industry, which developed over many years in the Lot-et-Garonne, in South West France. A large factory was built outside the medieval walls in the 1920's, though no longer exists, closing down in the 1970's.
The factory was generally acknowledged as the premier production lighting glass manufacturer in the world, renowned for its quality and style. Shades from Vianne were created by the hands of skilled French Artisans and each individual shade carries craftsmanship.
This glass is no longer available, though much stock left from the factory was bought by an American company and sold exclusively in Texas, to US Government buildings, Harvard University, Disney, Ellis Island Immigration museum, New York, and more. The Vianne, accidentally historical story, is as follows:
In the 1920's, the Laubenheimer Brewery in Nérac, anxious to sell beer in its own bottles, decided to manufacture their own, however, the production was not very profitable, so was stopped. Then in approx 1928-30 two industrialists decided to diversify the production, recruiting young Master glass-blowers from Bohemia to transmit their working method to Vianne. After testing the field of giftware, producing glass table goblets, the company then decided to produce oil lamps and light shades.
While a museum now exists, and glass blowing continues in Vianne, vintage items are a collectors market.
