Ruby Blue Co. è nata in riva all'acqua, ispirata dalla bellezza naturale, dalla creatività e dallo spirito affiatato della comunità balneare che Shah chiama casa. Curata nei minimi dettagli e realizzata a mano con amore per il colore, la consistenza e la narrazione, con un impegno costante per la sostenibilità, ove possibile.

LA MIA STORIA IN 400 PAROLE O MENO: Nata maschiaccio... mi sorprende persino essere nel mondo della gioielleria. Voglio dire, fino all'età di 6 anni avevo un taglio di capelli a fungo che ricordava quello dei Beatles e al liceo facevo da panchina per ogni singola squadra sportiva.
Ho scoperto la mia passione per caso durante un'estate umida quando avevo 15 anni. La mia amica Lindsay, più grande e molto più cool, era venuta a prendermi con la sua Pontiac cremisi. Abbiamo percorso Yonge Street a Toronto, fino a casa della sua amica Andrea, ed è stato allora che l'ho vista per la prima volta. Le texture, i colori, il motivo... il mio cuore ha sussultato alla vista di un braccialetto realizzato da Andrea. Sono passati più di 25 anni e continuo a farlo. Ho imparato e continuo a imparare sperimentando... a volte funziona alla grande al primo tentativo, spesso no.
Tra i venti e i trent'anni avevo un paio di negozi, in centro, e vendevo anche all'ingrosso. Ma dopo circa dieci anni, questo ha avuto un impatto sul mio corpo. Ho scoperto, attraverso un'ernia del disco e un formicolio alle mani, che non potevo più lavorare 80-100 ore a settimana. La mia identità e il mio lavoro erano strettamente intrecciati. Il mio ego era orgoglioso di lavorare con stilisti, di disegnare per celebrità e sfilate di moda e non sapeva cosa fare di questo cambiamento indesiderato. Così, sono caduto in depressione. E alla fine ho visto un ottimo terapeuta: Lloyd Gilbert. Anche se allora non la vedevo in questo modo... è stata una benedizione sotto mentite spoglie (promemoria per me stesso: ricorda di avere fiducia nella vita). Mi è stato donato il tempo libero per introspezionarmi e affrontare me stesso. Credo che lavorare su me stesso sia ciò che ha "attratto" il mio tesoro, Alan.
Facciamo un salto in avanti di due figli dopo (a solo un anno e mezzo di distanza l'uno dall'altro - con grande rispetto per le mamme gemellari e le mamme single), ho lanciato una nuova linea... una specie di terza figlia. E l'ho chiamata Ruby Blue Co (Ruby è il nostro cognome, Blue rappresenta la nostra comunità sulla spiaggia e Co... sembra figo, eh?!). Lavoro da casa. Gli orari flessibili mi permettono di trascorrere del tempo con la mia famiglia, di stare al passo con le infinite pulizie e la cucina (ho iniziato a cucinare solo a 35 anni) e, da tre anni, sono tornata all'Università di Toronto part-time (cercando di rimediare a un rimpianto silenzioso che avevo: aver abbandonato dopo il primo anno).
ISPIRAZIONE: La maggior parte dell'ispirazione per i miei gioielli proviene da Madre Natura... dalle incredibili combinazioni di colori che ci sono là fuori ai materiali che utilizzo nei miei design, come il vetro di mare e il legno di deriva (che trovo sulla spiaggia vicino a casa nostra). Altre volte l'ispirazione arriva da una canzone, una poesia, la storia di un altro essere umano o un bellissimo motivo su un capo.
GRATITUDINE: Quando ero piccolo, io e la mia famiglia ci spostavamo spesso, per motivi di sopravvivenza. Ora che sono più grande e ho una famiglia mia, mi sento davvero fortunato ad aver messo radici nella comunità di Beach a Toronto. Un posto dove non solo conosciamo i nostri vicini, ma possiamo contare gli uni sugli altri e persino fare barbecue insieme.
OBIETTIVO: Vorrei provare a contribuire a un mondo più pulito. Questo vale anche per il mio lavoro. In molti dei miei progetti utilizzo materiali riciclati e sto lavorando per ottenere imballaggi compostabili al 100%, compresi i miei sacchetti riutilizzabili per gioielli e la carta da regalo.
MISSIONE: La mia missione nella vita e nel mio lavoro è diffondere GIOIA. Spero di riuscirci con i miei allegri gioielli e con il servizio clienti che offro.
Come piccola impresa con sede nella vivace città di Toronto, onoro il territorio tradizionale dei Mississaugas of the Credit, degli Anishinaabe, dei Chippewa, degli Haudenosaunee e dei Wendat. Questa terra, protetta dal Trattato 13 e dal Patto Wampum "Dish With One Spoon", è da tempo un luogo di incontro per diverse comunità. Oggi, continua a essere la dimora di molti popoli delle Prime Nazioni, Inuit e Métis. Insieme, celebriamo la ricca storia di questa terra e ci impegniamo a promuovere legami significativi con i suoi custodi originari.

MY STORY IN 400 WORDS OR LESS: Born a tomboy... it surprises even me to be in the jewellery business. I mean until age 6, I had a mushroom cut resembling one of The Beatles and in high school, I was a bench-warmer for every single sports team.
I accidentally discovered my passion during a humid summer when I was 15. My older and much cooler friend Lindsay had picked me up in her crimson Pontiac. We cruised down Yonge Street in Toronto, to her friend Andrea’s house and that’s when I first saw it. The textures, the colours, the pattern....my heart skipped a beat at the sight of a bracelet Andrea had made. It's been over 25 years now and I’m still at it. I have learned and continue to learn by experimenting...sometimes this works brilliantly the first go and often it does not.
In my twenties-early thirties I had a couple of shops, mid-town, and wholesaled too. But after about ten years that took a toll on my body. I learned through a herniated disc and tingling hands, that I couldn't work 80–100-hour weeks anymore. My identity and work were intertwined tightly. My ego was proud of working with stylist, designing for celebrities and fashion shows and didn't know what to do with this unwelcome change. So, I became depressed. And eventually saw a great therapist – Lloyd Gilbert. Although I didn't see it this way then....it was a blessing in disguise (note to self: remember to trust in life). I was gifted with the down time to introspect and face myself. I think working on me is what "attracted" my sweetie, Alan.
Fast forward to two babies later (just a year and a half apart from each other - huge respect for twin moms and single moms), I launched a new line...a third baby of sorts. And I named her Ruby Blue Co (Ruby is our last name, Blue represents our beach community, and Co...sounds cool eh?!). I work from my home office. The flexible hours allow me to spend time with my family, somewhat keep up with the endless cleaning and cooking (I only started cooking at 35), and as of three years ago, I’m back at University of Toronto part-time (trying to mend a silent regret I had – dropping out after my first year).
INSPIRATION: Most of the inspiration behind my jewellery comes from Mother Nature....from the incredible colour combinations out there to the materials that I use in my designs, such as sea glass and driftwood (which I source at the beach near our home). Other times inspiration strikes from a song, or a poem, or another human's story, or a beautiful pattern on a garment.
GRATITUDE: When I was a little kid, my family and I moved around a lot, for survival reasons. Now that I am older and have a family of my own, I feel truly blessed to have set our roots in the Beach community in Toronto. A place where we not only know our neighbours we can count on one another and even have BBQs together.
GOAL: I would like to try to contribute to a cleaner world. This includes in my work. In many of my designs I use recycled materials, and I am working towards 100% compostable packing, including my reusable jewellery pouches, and paper gift wrap.
MISSION: My mission in life, and in my business is to spread JOY. I hope I do this with my cheerful jewels and the customer service I provide.
As a small business based in the vibrant city of Toronto, I honour the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. This land, protected under Treaty 13 and the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Covenant, has long been a gathering place for diverse communities. Today, it remains home to many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Together, we celebrate the rich history of this land and commit to fostering meaningful connections with its original caretakers.
