Joseph Carey Merrick (often wrongly named as John) was an Englishman in the Victorian era. He suffered from what is now believed to have been Proteus syndrome which led to deformities throughout his body, so he therefore spent much of his life working as a sideshow act.

However, after being given permanent residence at the Royal London Hospital, it emerged that he was a highly sensitive and intelligent man. He would end letters with poetry and enjoyed collecting wild flowers. He was immortalised in the 1980 film "The Elephant Man", where he was played by John Hurt.

Can't wait to give this a try! The Elephant Man is one of my favorite movies of all time, and to see that someone made a pattern of John / Joseph Merrick makes me so happy. Just wish I could have a little Dr. Treves to go with him! Thank you for a great pattern!

As soon as I saw this, I loved the idea of making an amigurumi Joseph Merrick. Pretty unique, I really like to make unusual things. The pattern does really well to capture the essence of Mr. Merrick. Pretty easy pattern to follow if you have experience of amigurumi. Pattern could do with more progress/construction pictures. But overall very Happy with it.
