In The Lord of the Rings, the Star of the Dúnedain was a silver brooch, shaped like a many-rayed star, worn by the Rangers of the North. It served as part of their identity, and the only ornamentation the Rangers ever wore in their journeys.

The eight pointed star appears in spiritual traditions from many different cultures across the globe. The Star of Ishtar or Star of Inanna is a symbol of the ancient Sumerian goddess Inanna and her East Semitic counterpart Ishtar. Because Ishtar was associated with the planet Venus, the star is also known as the Star of Venus. Muslim legend tells of Solomon using the star to capture djinns or genies. In Norwegian knitting it is called a selburose.

The roots of the eight-point star symbol are in early astronomy. The eight lines are symbolic of the four corners of space (north, south, east, and west) and time (two solstices and two equinoxes). A compass rose, sometimes called a windrose or rose of the winds, is the figure on a compass, map, nautical chart, or monument used to display the orientation of the cardinal directions (north, east, south, and west) and their intermediate points.

I make this eight pointed star as either a pendant to be worn on a cord or chain, or as a brooch. It measures 5 1/2 cm across. The pendant has a 4 mm loop on the back.
