There are approximately 356 species of turtles living on land in all continents except Antarctica and in both salt water and fresh water. They live in a diverse world much like ours. But they are not social type like we are. Their shells are variously modified and shaped to meet the needs of defense, feeding, and movement. They range from teeny weeny to enormous. All turtles, no matter how long or short their necks, have eight cervical vertebrae, but those that fold their neck vertically can withdraw the head into the shell. Turtles do not chew because they have no teeth, they crush their meat and plant life with a broad, thick sheath inside the mouth. 100 years is not the maximum for a few species, especially sea turtles and giant tortoises, but for small domesticated turtles like this little turtle that could, thrives off the hands of the human. Please take good care of it. These animals are precious and should be treated as such.
