My name is Catherine and I am the artist behind Arboresk.

My paintings are landscape based and, as I grow older, it is fascinating to watch the recurrent themes and symbols become a personal vocabulary.

My work is an examination of the limits to freedom – both individual and collective – inherent in our sense of identity and place within the contemporary world.

In this respect the natural landscape is seen to be overlaid with, and expressive of, the emotional life of the individual in response to the politics of existence.

Where I use the female form, I present her as an embodiment of a question, a thought, or an understanding, with her posture, physical pose and clothing, an articulation of a particular idea.

And the name, Arboresk?
Well, it's my combination of arboretum ; the space enclosed by the branches of trees, when they touch the ground, and arabesque ; the decorative style that combines natural motifs, eg. flowers and foliage, to produce intricate patterns.

I felt that this describes my feelings about my little shop. I am a bower bird, displaying my creations here

I am an Irish artist working primarily in ink, gouache and watercolour pigments. My work draws upon a vocabulary of symbolic imagery gleaned from observation of her surrounding environment of bird and plant life in the west of Ireland.
