The process of creating lab-grown rubies involves several steps. First, a tiny seed crystal of natural ruby is placed in a crucible, which is then filled with a mixture of chemicals that includes aluminum oxide, which is the main component of natural rubies. As the mixture in the crucible melts, the seed crystal acts as a template, causing the aluminum oxide to crystallize around it, forming a larger synthetic ruby crystal. This process can take several weeks or even months, depending on the size of the desired lab ruby.

Once the lab ruby crystal has been grown, it can be cut and polished to the desired shape and size, just like a natural ruby. In fact, it can be difficult to tell a lab-grown ruby from a natural one with the naked eye, as the two can have very similar appearances.

One advantage of lab-created rubies is that they can be produced in larger sizes and with greater clarity than natural rubies, which are often mined from the earth and may have impurities or inclusions. Lab-grown rubies can also be produced more sustainably, with less impact on the environment than mining natural rubies.

In addition to their use in jewelry, lab-created rubies have many other applications. For example, they can be used in lasers, as they have properties that make them ideal for focusing light. They are also used in other high-tech devices, such as sensors and semiconductors, due to their unique optical and electrical properties.
